Say, who owns the domain name crosswordpuzzles.com? I don’t believe it’s ever occurred to me to find out. Let’s go take a look!
Why, it’s none other than… Myles Mellor. Who the heck is that?
Myles Mellor is an internationally published crossword writer and is one of the most successful puzzle writers in America today. His crosswords reach over a million readers monthly.
Wowzers! I’ve discovered the secret lair of one of the most successful puzzle writers in America. As a die-hard puzzle lover, I’m deeply ashamed I hadn’t heard of this guy sooner. Let’s grab some sample puzzles!
Um. Er. What? Something is very, very wrong here. These puzzles are seen by over a million people a month? On what planet?
Agggh! I looked at the clues! I shouldn’t have looked at the clues. Brace yourself. I’ll provide the answers in brackets:
Baby slaughter place- now haunted- surprise surprise! [TOWER OF LONDON]
Mystery channel’s [AES. What the?]
W__ fare [AR]
Chitty Chitty ___ ____ [BANG]
___ _oolidge singer [RITAC!]
He had a Brave Heart [MEL GIBSON]
____ Jack (for short) [ROO]
It’s hard to choose a favorite, isn’t it? RITAC as an entry makes me glad to be alive, but I think it’s edged out by the clue for TOWER OF LONDON. “Baby slaughter place!” That gives me new hope for this crossword I’ve been working on, the one where the theme entries are all the ways a person can murder a kitten.
When Tim Parker retires from USA Today, I think I know who’s got the inside track to the job.

Dude has a lot of websites.
But I’m sure he charges mere nickles for his work.
Sneer all you want, but the guy’s been published in Canadian Jeweler magazine, and you haven’t.
Jealous much?

Insert winking emoticon here.
Myles sez: “An actor remains true to him____ while playing someone else.” Makes you wonder how anyone ever clued SELF before.
Smirk all you want, guys, but just remember that Justin Snyder — *the* Justin Snyder– has had a good response from his readers regarding Mellor’s crosswords.
And while we’re on the topic, perhaps Trip or Tyler would like to describe their own personal passage from, in Mellor’s words, beginner to child to expert solver. I imagine going from beginner to child must have been rough.
(to Rubrick) what with the learning to walk and dealing with the “Baby slaughter place” clue at the same time…
Oh please oh please let him be giving a surprise talk at Stamford next month!! I so want insight into this amazing mind!
That would be awesome. Kind of like when the Time Cube guy gave a talk at MIT.
Thanks guys for all these hilarious comments!
